Winter Programme 2020-2021

Please note we will not be holding meetings at the Friends’ Meeting House for the rest of 2020 because of the current pandemic. We hope to re-start in 2021. Meanwhile we are arranging to hold most of our autumn programme by Zoom.

(Meetings are normally held at 7.30pm on Mondays at the Friends Meeting House, Stramongate, Kendal)

12 Oct 2020 ZOOM MEETING. Jamie Normington: Coast to Coast for ‘The Lost Words’. Jamie walked 200 miles to raise funds to buy nature books for 200 Cumbrian schools, visiting communities along the way

26 Oct 2020 ZOOM MEETING. Bryan Yorke: Nature of Hutton Roof. Update on Fauna and Flora of Hutton Roof

9 Nov 2020 ZOOM MEETING. Mike Hall: Fungi of Field, Forest and Fell. A look at some of the commoner fungi of these habitats with evidence of their spore dispersal mechanisms, and their importance is the ecological balance.

23 Nov 2020 ZOOM MEETING. Dorothy Grace: New Zealand: Ferns, Forests and Flippers. The Natural History of New Zealand including North, South and Stewart Islands

14 Dec 2020 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING postponed from March. This will be held by Zoom with an opportunity for members to arrange for proxy votes the be held by the Chairman.

11 Jan 2021 Judith Robinson: Birds in Chile. An illustrated talk based on a visit to central and northern Chile in 2019, featuring aspects of the natural history of the area and concentrating on the birds

25 Jan 2021 Steve Lipscombe: The BOOM project (Back on our map). Species restoration in South Cumbria

8 Feb 2021 Ian Hodkinson: Early Naturalists in Lakeland. Describes the lives and pioneering natural history studies by Lakeland naturalists from 1650 to 1820. Emphasis will be on Kendal naturalists

22 Feb 2021 John Mounsey: Peru in May. Animals and plants among the Andes and down to the Pacific.  Some reference to human activities is inevitable 

8 Mar 2021 The 3rd Fred Gould Memorial Lecture: Gary Gould: Nature through the lens. A selection of slides by Fred Gould, showing a variety of flora and fauna
