In 1999, Margaret Erskine Wilson (a long-standing member and latterly President of Kendal Natural History Society) presented to the Society 150 flower paintings, on which she had been working for 45 years. She called the project, ‘The Calendar’ and wrote of it, “Begun in 1943/4 for a friend who said ‘I might learn the names of flowers if you drew them for me, in the months they’re in flower’! After her death, I “repossessed” it and continued it until about 1990. I think about 3/4 of the British Flora are represented.” Margaret E. Wilson. June, 1999.
In 2016, the paintings were published in book form. The book is entitled Wildflowers of Britain, Month by Month and includes transcripts of Margaret’s notes and a complete list of all the flowers featured. It is available from bookshops, from Amazon, or direct from the publishers, Merlin Unwin Books.
In 2017, Wildflowers of Britain, Month by Month was shortlisted for the Lakeland Book of the Year Awards and was Runner Up for the Latitude Prize for Illustration and Presentation.
